General Dentist

General Dentists diagnose and treat problems affecting the teeth, gums, and mouth tissue. They also doctors instruct patients on the proper ways to brush and floss. Duties shown on example resumes of General Dentists include updating patient medical records, performing cosmetic dentistry, and coordinating the surgery budget. Applicants are required to possess a bachelor’s degree before being admitted into dental school, and in addition to a degree, employers will also seek out candidates who can list licensures on their resumes.

Oral Surgeon

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons work in hospitals and clinics. They help patients manage diseases in their teeth and surrounding tissues, restructure bones to correct congenital defects or repair wounds, and treat injuries and deformities in other parts of the head and neck.

Dental Office Manager

Dental Office Managers oversee administrative tasks in dental offices. Their main responsibilities are designing the marketing strategy, handling budgets and payrolls, purchasing supplies, organizing events, and supervising staff. The most successful Dental Office Manager resume samples emphasize leadership, analytical thinking, strong organizational skills and communication abilities. Based on our example resumes, no formal education is mandatory for the position, although holding a college degree represents an advantage. Previous experience with dental office work is the most important requirement.


Orthodontic Assistants help orthodontists assist patients who require corrective procedures for alignment and spacing issues with their teeth. Tasks highlighted on sample resumes of Orthodontic Assistants include taking impressions of teeth, pouring and trimming models, fabricating retainers, and taking and developing x-rays. Applicants interested in becoming Orthodontic Assistants list a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and on-the-job training or an associate’s degree or certificate in dental assisting on their resumes, along with licensure in certain states.

Laboratory Technician
Dental Laboratory Technician Job Duties:

Replaces partial or total loss of natural teeth by constructing partial or full dentures (metal and non-metal). Restores natural teeth by fabricating crowns and bridges. Corrects dental irregularities by manufacturing fixed or removable appliances.

Dental Office Assistant
Dental Assistant Job Responsibilities:

Prepares treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols. Readies patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient. Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.


Periodontists treat the gums and jaw bones of patients. Examples of Periodontist job duties are assessing patient condition, developing treatment plans, placing implants, educating patients in preventative care, and performing a variety of cosmetic procedures. Those interested in a Periodontist career should be able to showcase the following assets in their resumes: clinical skills, customer focus, decision making, infection control, and being able to work in a standing position for hours. Eligible resume samples in the field make display of a dental degree and a license obtained after passing the National Board Dental Examinations.

Dental Hygienist

Dental Hygienists are present in dentistry offices and provide basic dental care services. Responsibilities listed on a Dental Hygienist resume sample are cleaning patient’s teeth, offering dental hygiene advice, identifying oral health issues, referring to the dentist when necessary, and sterilizing medical equipments and instruments. Those interested in a Dental Hygienist degree should demonstrate throughout their resumes basic dentistry expertise, dexterity, strong communication and interpersonal skills, attention to details, and teamwork. An Associate’s Degree and licensure are required to candidates for a Dental Hygienist role.

Other Dental Roles

Dental Assistant

Dental assistants work alongside dentists, performing some patient care, but not the same tasks dental hygienists are licensed to carry out. Laboratory and office duties are also among their many responsibilities.

In some states, those who want to become dental assistants must graduate from a one-year diploma or certificate program. Dental practices located in states that don’t require formal education to provide on-the-job training. A license, registration or certification is compulsory in some states. 

Dental Technician

Dental technicians manufacture prosthetics and other appliances based on dentists’ specifications. They are also called dental laboratory technicians. They do not perform direct patient care.

Most dental technicians receive on-the-job training from laboratories that manufacture dental appliances. They begin their careers as helpers and are given more complex tasks as they gain experience. States do not license them, but they can get voluntary certification from the National Board for Certification, an independent board established by the National Association of Dental
